Thames Karate Association has officially awarded Robert Rhodes, a respected figure in martial arts, his 9th dan black belt, strengthening his legacy as one of the most accomplished karate practitioners in the world. The ceremony took place during an Invitational Seminar in Faversham on 24th November 2024, that gathered students, peers, and enthusiasts from across the martial arts community to honour his extraordinary contributions to karate.
Robert Rhodes, who began his karate journey over five decades ago, has built an impressive career that connects athletic excellence, teaching, and a deep commitment to the philosophical underpinnings of martial arts. Starting his training in the 1970s, he quickly distinguished himself as a prodigy, earning his black belt in just a few years.
Throughout his career, he has achieved remarkable milestones, including:
• Mentoring thousands of students across multiple generations, many of whom have gone on to earn high dan rankings themselves.
• Competing at an elite level, securing titles at both national and international championships and a member of the victorious British All-Styles Squad which beat Japan to win the 1975-77 World Championships in Los Angeles.
• Examiner and technical expert: In 1971, he was first selected as a KUGB Grading Examiner and in 1974, he became a full-time instructor of the KUGB. He was a member of the KUGB Technical Committee and is also a qualified international referee.
His teaching has been transformative, fostering a culture of respect, discipline, and continual learning. Sharing his knowledge and experience through seminars, classes and literature.
The 9th dan, one of the highest possible ranks in karate, is awarded only to those who have demonstrated exceptional skill, knowledge, and lifelong dedication to the art. The decision to bestow this honour upon Robert Rhodes reflects his unparalleled contributions to the discipline.
During the award ceremony, Rhodes gave a speech, expressing his gratitude to his mentors, peers, and students. “This recognition is not just a testament to my journey, but to everyone who has shared it with me—those who challenged, inspired, and supported me,” he said. “Karate is more than a practice; it’s a way of life that teaches us to grow not just as martial artists, but as people.”
Beyond his technical mastery, Robert Rhodes is celebrated for his ability to inspire others. Known for his humility and kindness, he has worked tirelessly to make karate accessible to individuals of all ages and backgrounds. His influence has extended beyond his dojo to global seminars, where he has been a sought-after speaker and instructor.
As Robert steps into this new chapter as a 9th dan, his mission remains unchanged: to uphold the values of karate and to continue guiding others on their martial arts journeys. His students, past and present, describe him as a “living legend” whose dedication serves as a model for future generations.
The Thames Karate Association and the broader martial arts community celebrated this monumental achievement, hailing it as a milestone not just for Robert Rhodes but for the entire world of karate.
