Our story
Thames Karate Association boasts a rich and storied history, dating back to the 1960s. Founded by Sensei Ray Fuller, the organisation's first club was established in Dartford, Kent. Sensei Fuller, having trained under several esteemed Japanese Karate masters, including the renowned Sensei Keinosuke Enoeda, aimed to impart the traditional teachings of karate to people across Kent and South East London.
In the 1970s, Sensei Jimmy Patterson joined the ranks and played a pivotal role in the organisation's development. He founded the Grove Park Karate Club. Under his guidance, the club produced national and world champions, such as Elwyn Hall.
Val Patterson, who served as the Chief Instructor until recently, was another key figure in Thames Karatel's history. Her unwavering commitment to traditional karate and spirited training upheld the organisation's high standards and inspiring generations of students to embrace this ancient Japanese martial art.
The legacies of these influential figures continue to inspire and guide Thames Karate Association, as the organisation upholds the principles of traditional Shotokan karate and fosters a sense of community and discipline among its members.
